Moving Insurance - Choose
the right coverage for your move.
Moving insurance can help to lessen the effects of any damage or loss to your possessions while they are being moved to your new home. You may expect the mover to be liable for any losses in transit, but this may not be true.
Most movers automatically provide “valuation,” which is the predetermined limit of liability, and is mentioned in the Bill of Lading. The cost of valuation is included in the quoted price. Valuation is not insurance.
Licensed movers are required by the law to provide limited liability coverage. The cost of this coverage is included in the price of your move, but it may only cover a fraction of the value of any items that are damaged or lost in transit. Additional coverage is available at an extra cost.
Find out about the extent of liability of the mover, in case of loss or damage to your possessions. Remember, most movers don’t accept any claims for loss or damage relating to items that have not been packed by them.
Study the contract to find out how you will have to establish the approximate value of things that are lost or damaged. Find out about the limits, exclusions, deductibles, and other terms and conditions.
You can get coverage based on the weight of your possessions, though claims may be limited to the depreciated value of your possessions.
You can choose to get coverage based on the “Assessed Value” of the possessions, as declared by you. This type of coverage is preferable if you are moving expensive items that don’t weigh much.
You can also opt for a “Full Value Protection” that will pay for the repair or replacement of the items at current rates, regardless of how old they are. This type of coverage provides the highest level of protection. Minimum coverage amount requirements and some deductibles may be applicable.
Insurance companies will ask you about how much movers insurance cover you need, so it worth taking inventory of all items that are to be moved. The moving company may ask you to mention valuable items separately, and to pay an additional amount to cover them.
If you want to be fully covered you will have to get additional move insurance. Ask your present home insurer if your home insurance policy will provide any coverage during transit, and if it doesn’t, you can arrange for a short-term moving & storage insurance policy.
