Packing Properly - Solid tips to insure a smooth move
Packing properly can help you to save a lot of time and money
during your move! Even though a professional packing company can
relieve you of all the hassles of packing, you can save a lot of
money by doing the packing yourself.
However, you need to remember that packing movers will not
accept liability for damage caused to items that customers have
packed.
If you decide to do the packing yourself, it is best to start as
soon as you find out that you need to move. If you have several
weeks to do the packing, you can easily pack a few packing boxes
from one room every day.
Make a moving and packing checklist, and assign different jobs
to your family members. Start by packing the things that you are
not likely to need before you move.
Take inventory of all your possessions, and make separate lists
of the things you want to sell, donate, or take with you. An
inventory will be useful for obtaining estimates from packing
and moving services, as well as insurance companies.
Stick a numbered label on each packing carton, with a packing
list that mentions what it contains, and which room it is meant
for. Put a sticker saying Fragile on packing cartons that
contain breakable items.
Buy professional quality moving and packing supplies, to ensure
that your possessions will reach the destination in a good
condition. Used packing supplies may be much cheaper, but they
may not be able to stand up to the strain of moving.
Use professional quality packing tape, which can hold moving
boxes that are full. Masking tape does not have enough strength
for this.
Use lots of paper inside each carton, to cushion your
possessions, but remember that the ink from old newspaper can
rub off on some of your things. You can use clean newsprint to
prevent this.
Fill cartons to the top, and never leave them partially empty,
or stuff them with too many things. Keep heavy items in small
packing boxes for moving, so they will be easy to lift.
Discard hazardous things like acid, fire crackers, ammunition,
aerosol cans and other non-permitted items.
Pack important documents and valuable items separately, and take
them with you when you relocate.
Pack cooking utensils, toiletries and some other items that will
be needed immediately when you reach, in a separate box, and
write Open First in bold letters on the label.
